A genetic chromosomal syndrome affecting physical features and usually causing mental retardation. It is caused by having an extra third copy of chromosome 21, usually by a random error in the mother's egg, though a small percentage are familial such as Translocation Down Syndrome (~4-5%) and occur from a chromosomal defect in a parent. Mosaic Down Syndrome occurs around 1% and has milder effects as the patient has a mixture of both normal and trisomy cells. Down Syndrome can be diagnosed prenatally in the womb during pregnancy using several different tests including ultrasound, amniocentesis and CVS. Diagnosis after birth can usually be made from physical and facial features.

Mongolism is a slang term for what is more commonly known as Down's Syndrome. It's called mongolism because of the facial features seen in people with Down's; which resembles (or was that to have resembled) the features of early mongolians.
People with D.S. are not necesarrily mentally impaired; though the two are usually thought to go hand in hand, as a high percentage of those with Down's do have some form of mental retardation.

Down's Syndrome is caused by the person having an extra 21st chromosome, so instead of two; they have three. It is usually hereditery (as in, if someone in your family has it, the chance your child will is increased) and for some reason, women who give birth in later years before menopause (40s, 50s, etc) have an increased rate of giving birth to a child with Down's Syndrome.
