Protein in urine sample?!

Question: I went for a physical yesterday and the doctor wanted to check the sugar levels in my urine but found there was protein in the sample instead. She said that there is a disorder that would cause this in children but she said I am most likely too old to have that. She said the last time the tested for this it wasn't present, but she didn't elaborate, I am kinda worried about this. I go back in 2 weeks so she can test for it again. Someone said that maybe the Depo-Provera shot could cause this? What else could cause this? I am not overweight and do not have any other health problems, anyone ever heard of this?

Hey! Please don't panic! She should have explained to you what protein in the urine could mean but seeing as she didn't she may suspect this to be a 'one off' thing. From what i can gather, her testing you again is to see whether the protein in the urine is a persistent thing (i think they test you about 3 times before they consider this a persistent thing) and if so, then she will sit down with you and talk about possible causes.

If you are really worried, just mention that to her when you see her next and get her to explain more about what this could mean for you.

I managed to find this information for you, i hope it helps a little.......

"Persistent Protein in the Urine
Proteinuria that is constant or persistent is more likely to be a problem and may require a workup. It is usually caused by diseases involving the glomerulus, the filtering device of the kidneys. The most common cause is diabetes mellitus but it may be many other diseases, conditions, and even medications can cause it. "

Other than the small amount i have already given you, i don't think you will find a narrow enough answer to your question as there are lots of conditions that cause protein to be in the urine, but please don't worry too much - not all these conditions are bad. Also not all sources of information are reliable so if you have done some own personal research just remember that the best news that grabs peoples attention is bad news, so don't stress yourself out too much.

Again, i would talk to your doctor. If you can't wait for the 2 weeks that you see her again the contact her and arrange to have a short appointment in between these visits to talk about it properly. I wish you the best of luck.

your kidneys should be taking care of that protein

I had the same problem about 10 years ago. After investigation they gave me a blood pressure tablet Losartan Potassium 50mg. lower the blood pressure reduce the protein from the kidneys, After a biopsy I was told that there was some kidney damage. It worked and there was an article in Lancet about it during the summer I think of 1997/8 It may not be appropriate for you but it is worth a mention. i still take one tablet a day and as long as I do this they do not expect the problem to return I live in UK

Protein in urine is 90%+ caused by some kind of kidney disorder. There is a long list of kidney problems that can cause proteinuria. the other small list of causes can be Collagen vascular diseases, over training (exercising too much), medications, sickle cell disease. So i will say something is wrong with your renal function. You do not need to be over weight or have infection for kidney problems.

i dont know what it could be... i have something called nephrotic syndrome that causes protein in my urine, and not many adults have it, that could be what your doctor was talking about...
