Question: I had some blood tests done, I did a test where I took 12 salt pills for 2 days ( 24 total pills), then I went and had my blood drawn. Well, my doctor was out of the office when I went for the other part of the test today- I had to go on a LOW sodium diet for 3 days following the salt pills and HIGH sodium diet I did for two days. They had part of my results in and my nurse said that my sodium was still a little low, which is weird because I took those pills, and was on a high sodium diet.

**What could cause my sodium to be so low after such a high sodium diet?**

Any links to info I would appreciate. Thanks.

are you into working out? do you run or sweat everyday or night? if you work out hard, or do cardio daily, you will lose Na+... sweating depletes your levels.
Also, you may be hyponatremic due to a medical problem that you just don't know about yet... in which case these tests are a good idea. (if you take in a lot of sodium, but still show low sodium levels.... it could be a problem with your ability to "uptake" sodium into the body.. or with your Na+ regulators..... which could actually lead to a problem with your potassium levels. (ask your doctor why..... long story)
So, keep on it, and I guess just trust your doctor, oh, and don't trust the nurse to do any type of diagnosis... they are caregivers not diagnosticians!...
Good luck.

you may have something going on with your potassium levels. most people who do not store sodium store potassium.
There are many diseases that can cause abnormal salt levels, including diseases of the kidney, pituitary gland, and hypothalamus.
Sweating- exersizing too much.
the issue can be related to diet as well- those who are bulimic or are not eating enough (anorexic) can have issues with storing sodium as seen in those who use diruretics.

The nurse may have also meant it was lower than the high that was expected. Like if they gave those pills and your salt should have been at ten, and normal is five. then yours tested at seven. she was looking for a ten. So maybe your 'low" isn't as bad as you think.
