My 9 yrs. old was just diagnosed with a hole in his heart!?!

Question: My son had been having shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing for quite some time. I took him to his PED who ordered an echocardiogram. After 1 week the results came back. I called his PED today and the nurse refered him to a large unniversity hospital (because we have no pediatric cardiologists in our area) she explained that my son has a small hole in his heart?!?!?!?!?!!!! She then called it a small leak. I asked her if she meant he had a murmur and she replied that I would have to ask the pediatric cardiologist all of my questions because he would know more. She never fully told me if it was a murmur, she just said a tiny hole in the heart and a small leak! I am terrified!!!! She told me that they wanted him to go see the ped. cardiologist just as a precaution. All of this makes me worried sick. Even more worrysome is that the school pretty much forced me to have him put on Concerta stimulant for adhd. I'm afraid the adhd med. caused this! I blame the school for pushing me into

I know a 56 year old man who was just diagnosed with diabetes, so he went for a whole battery of other tests, including an ECG. Results were, he had a hole in his heart ! Alarmed by this, a cardiologist put him at ease by telling him that he was born with this condition and it's not that uncommon. His body has compensated for the abnormality and he has absolutely nothing to worry about.

omg im so so sorry =[

Nurse was correct in saying that you should talk with the pediatric cardiologist who can explain to you exactly what this is and what may have caused it. Once you have all the facts you will feel less "at sea" about what is truly a dreadful situation for you and for your son. Take a few moments to write out your list of questions for the doctor. This will help make things go smoothly as well as help you clarify your thoughts.

no, the concerta didn't cause this...
it's a birth condition that can be corrected or managed, fortunately for you they caught it...
often it goes undiagnosed and after the child reaches puberty, his body has grown and puts more demand on the heart he drops dead on the basketball court one day...
just limit his physical activities and make an appointment with the PED for a full explanation and prognosis...

i do though question the adhd diagnosis if he took strattera for two months and it didn't help... after you get the heart thing managed i'd suggest having him re-evaluated for maybe bipolar... as strattera is known to make bipolar worse...

First of all, your worrying won't help you much; instead, it will prevent you from thinking well of a solution.

A heart doctor needs to see ur child's physical condition. U need to see him personally. Don't trust the opinion of anyone other than a doctor. I wish u the best. Pray, not worry. God bless.

oh relax. your son will be fine, okay. take deep breaths
