I have a heart murmur. A murmur at its simplest is an unusual noise heard when listening to the heart, caused by unusual flow of blood. Typically murmur are due to a congenital heart defect. In the unlikely event you've had Rheumatic Fever you may end up with a murmur.

There are several conditions of the heart which cause murmurs; of course each has it's own medical term depending on the reason. In many cases, there is no need for concern nor a defect. If you have a murmur, your doctor might refer you to a cardiologist to check it out out.

In my case, I have a congenital heart defect in which the valve that controls blood flow to the ventrical did not close completely. (my murmer sounded like a "whooshing" noise as blood leaked through the valve.) This was always described to me as a whole in my heart. I had it checked out as a kid and nothing was done; it was felt the valve may correct itself as I grew.

In the end, when I was 20 I had surgery to replace the valve with an artificial patch. This actually increased my endurance as my heart was more efficient. I will likely need another surgery when I get older, but this defect has no impact on my life expectancy.

I had a heart murmur as a kid. No, I don't believe it's a hole or leak. They said it was from having a high fever( rheumatic). But then later I outgrew it it, and all was fine. There are many terms for it.

murmurs can be caused by many things and can range from a slight wooshing sound with the normal heart rhythm to an extra sound that is not part of the rhythm. In some cases the valves that separate the atria (upper chamber) and ventricle (lower chambers) of the heart allow backflow of blood when the heart contracts. certain drugs and illnesses can cause murmurs, congenital heart defects. Instead of trying to list them all I have included a site that will give you information about many sorts of murmurs, some are innocent and others are problematic.

A heart murmur is a sound you hear when you listen to the heart.
I counted 35 different named murmurs in the book I opened.
They are caused by different things going on with the heart, for instance
an ejection murmur is heard when the volume and velocity of blood
being ejected from the heart is at its maximum.
A Mitral murmur is a murmur caused by disease of the mitral valve.
A Pulmonic murmur is one due to disease of the valves of the pulmonary artery. A seagull murmur is one resembling the call of a seagull, frequently heard in aortic insufficiency.

Some sound like a swishing sound. A high fever can cause
a murmur, especially in a child.
