Breast cancer can be from a genetic reason...i know i have a good chance of getting it because my grandma had it. As you age you are a more of a risk of getting it. Lifestyle choices can also contribute such as smoking, drinking and being around places that have radiation and stuff like that...One more thing that can put someone in danger of getting it can be from getting his in the breast, when someone is hit it may make a bruise and bruises cause tissue to heal and it does this by copying itself...tissue copying itself can cause cancerous tisses to grow...
symptoms are lumps in the breast and usually they are painless...this does not mean that every lump is cancerous...girls going through puberty will notice lumps...dont panic...check every month for changes though
hope i helped

It just happens. Your genes might increase your risk, for sure. In some women, some key genes are "fragile" and prone to mutations. Also, estrogen use can increase the risk somewhat, especially for estrogen-receptor dependent tumors.
Dr. Judah Folkman (RIP), the angiogenesis expert, gave an interesting lecture here a while ago and he stated that all women have many mini-breast tumors which come and go but sometimes grow out and escape immune surveillance.
So be vigilant and check regularly.

Nobody knows what causes breast cancer - cancer researchers don't, so nobody here will.

There ARE recognised risk factors for breast cancer, some preventable, some not. They're only risk factors though, and most women ticking one or all of the boxes don't get breast cancer and some women who have none of these risk factors do get breast cancer.

The risk factors are:

Getting older - the greatest risk factor; 80% of those diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50
