How can you stop horrible nightmares?!

Question: When I had open heart surgery (5 bypasses), they kept me heavily medicated for about a week. During that time I had horrible nightmares that were repetitive. This was a worse experience than having the heart attack. I still have this fear that if I ever have to face surgery again, that I will have similar nightmares. Any ideas on how to stop this from happening?

First of all, may God bless you and keep you. I had triple bypass, so I know a little of what I preach. The sedation will, in fact, cause nightmares, alter your taste for food, and other side-effects. Unfortunately, the sedation is necessary to control pain, heart activity, etc. I remember repeatedly dreaming that one of the nurses was riding a bicycle down the hall. When I told him about it one day, he laughed his *** off.

Your fear is understandable; if you ever do have to have surgery again, discuss this with your surgeon and cardio;ogist ahead of time; they might be able to use something different. I'm betting they filled you full of morphine; that stuff will really play with your head, but it's about the best painkiller around.

buy a dream catcher

Try to think about something or someone you love before going to bed, or when you are in bed. Focus on a crush or boyfriend, or try to think of being at the beach or having a good time. Relax and try to ignore the dreams...just say "they cant hurt me" because you are just imagining it. Ive had bad dreams in the past. I am sure it is a phase, but not having to do with the meds. I think you just might be scared or worried or anxious. I hope this helps.

you read the bible before you sleep

Wow. Nightmares are awful & I have had some horrible ones myself.

Nightmares come from worry, stress, depression and other ways of mental thinking.

A quick example from my life: I had horrible depression as a teen. I use to cut on myself to help ease the inside pain. I had a nightmares that I would cut people up & at times in the dream I would remove stuff from them. They were so vivid and so scary. This didn't help my insomnia either. My therapist told me that in the dream I was wanting to get the depressed and troubled parts of me out. Once I was over some of my mental problems the dreams stopped and I never had those nightmares again.

So I am guessing your nightmares are from the fear of having surgery. Surgery is scary. You are putting your life in someone elses hands. Let alone heart surgery. I'd be scared to death.

So while you sleep after the surgery you're mind tries to work through your fears in the nightmares.

I'd suggest that next time you know you have to have surgery to talk to your dr. He/She will most likely suggest you see a therapist. There is nothing wrong with seeing one. You will find it wonderful to talk to someone about your worried and your fears. They will help you work through them so you won't have to deal with them.

Also before you go to sleep try not to think of anything negative. Think only positive thoughts before sleep. I do this every night and I had my first nightmare in years last week. lol But it does work.

Hope this helps.

well don't look on extreme makeover or anythign with organs, horror, why not watch a girly movie at night and ring ur friend and quickly say "okay so do you want to come over for a girly movie Im trying not to think about surgery atm" and then you will be sorted.

If u have a bf, go out and forget if not watch loads of dvds or listen to music @ night.. and dont WORRY about tomorrow.

try meditating this will help you understand your dreams clearer and make you not have bad dreams. Before you go to sleep try not to eat junky foods it can cause bad dreams ok the meditation...

It also helps to record your dreams

I was having nightmares every night but my doctor put me on atenolol it's for blood pressure and heart palpitations. Now the bad dreams have stopped.
