Hi, I don't have all the answers for you but I will try to help you as much as I can. At the age of thirteen things changed for me. I started having these feelings that I could not explain. You go from feeling like you can take on the world to feeling like your at the bottom of this black hole that you can't climb out of. Depression is one of the symptoms. I started on antidepressants at 16. I have spent all my life trying to find the answer as to why I feel like I'm crazy. I was told several times that its all in my head. You have such moods swings that its hard to keep up with yourself. Sometimes you can be on the high side for days, weeks and even months. Other times its minutes. You feel mixed up, depressed angry tired to many emotions to name. Your mind never stops working. You will find that alot of us have problems sleeping because of this disease. Problems concentrating and being in the public. Yes this is inherited. My mother, brother and one of my sons have it as well as myself. The best advice I can give is this be completly honest to a doctor that specializes in this field as you can and do alot of reserch. Find a group or person that understands this disease and do alot of talking. Keep a journal of all your racing thoughts, they may not make sense but it helps to slow down the mind. Ask your family doctor to help you find answer that you have and a specialist. Hope this helps alittle. There is so much more to this disease that its hard to put it in a small e-mail. Remember you are not alone!! Write down any questions that come to mind and research them. Find a chat room or group with people that have bi-polar disorder.
Good luck to you! Let me know how things are going. Chris

it usually ALWAYS runs in families. All women on my mother's side have it. I was depressed until I started taking weight loss pills, and i went manic. There is usually something that will trigger a manic episode. Now, I have to take meds, and most likely for the rest of my life. If I don't I get depressed or go manic. I've never heard of many cases where people kill themselves.

It runs in families, mine too. It's closely related to depression (I mean that there might be one or two people with bipolar, but more with depression instead, having not had a mania triggered). My uncle died in front of a train, which the wider family want to believe is an accident....but I know from medical training (which I dropped out of due to severe depression) that people who kill themselves with a method so final, so unlikely to fail, were often bipolar or schizophrenic. My dad incidentally is a psychiatrist, and I think will always feel bad that he couldnt help. (He also feels bad because my cousing brother who I'm (I was) incredibly close to hung himself 3 6months ago...I'll never know if he was bipolar) Btw if you suffer depression, that doesnt mean you'll become bipolar, but if you've had manic episodes, it's presumed (because it's statistically backed up) that you'll get the depressive episodes and are bipolar. I know that answer's all over the place, but I seem to find it hard to provide coherent answers when it's relating to my own family.

So sorry to hear about your dad, & yes it is genetic. I suffer, suffer, suffer from it, I believe Churchill called it his "Black Dog"
I spent a year in a psychotherapy unit called the Henderson in Surrey. My bipolar wasn't cured, there is no cure, but I soon realized there were people with far greater problems.
I wept when I heard Richard's story. He and his sister were so terrified of their father when he came home from the pub pissed out of his head they would cuddle up together for comfort. well one thing led to another and a pregnancy ensued. It could have been Richard's or it could be the fathers. The swine raped his own daughter regularly. When the moster found out she was pregnant he made her have an abortion. At this point Richard snapped. the evil father had to be got rid of so he messed around with rhe brakes on the old man's car not realizing his beloved mother would be in the car too.
They both died in a horrific accident and even though he admitted to the cops about messing with the brakes they said there was no proof. So did he kill his mum & dad or not? A question that will haunt the poor guy for thr rest of his life.Oh yeah just to stick the boot in his sister committed suicide a year after the "accident" But the point of all this is that whenever I'm on a low I think of what Richard must be going through.
