Question: I just found out my dad has prostate cancer. How bad is this type of cancer and what are the odds it can be curable? Well he be ok? I heard that is more common if there over 65 but my dad is only 54. Please I really want to know.

The other posts are accurate - just wanted to add another 1st person story.

I was diagnosed with it at 55, had the DiVinci robot surgery about 7 weeks ago, and am now cancer free. It depends on when they caught it. It is a slow growing cancer and if your dad had annual PSA tests, he should be in good shape.

Billy J, sorry about your outcome. Choice of docs is key to a good outcome. Billy - make sure you are still getting second opinions - check US News and World Report for their ranking of cancer hospitals. I looked at it, and went to John Hopkins, #1 in the country. They are awesome.

There are many stages of prostate cancer. It depends on how advanced it is. But there are lots of treatments out there now. Go with your dad to the doctor next time and ask these questions.

From prostatecancerfoundation.org:

As with all cancers, "cure" rates for prostate cancer describe the percentage of patients likely remaining disease-free for a specific time. In general, the earlier the cancer is caught, the more likely it is for the patient to remain disease-free.

Because approximately 90% of all prostate cancers are detected in the local and regional stages, the cure rate for prostate cancer is very high
