HUsband has diabetes......?!

Question: He was diagnosed over a year ago. His blood sugar is usually about 108. He came home today and it was 336. He took his pm Glipizide, about 4 hours later it is 259. He hasn't eaten anything since he got home. His blood sugar is usually under control, what could be causing the jump? What should be done about it?

As a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patient, in the last 24 hours I've had all the information "stuffed" down my throat.

Maybe I can help:
Has he had any "new" stresses? I was told that stress can certainly increase a patients blood sugar.

He is getting a cold/flu? My endrocrinologist says that that can cause a rise as well.

Is he strickly following his diet? I was told that a simple stray-away from the approved amount of carbs can increase blood sugar.

As a younger patient, I wasn't really told about this, but:
Has he taken an increase in medication tha has made his blood PRESSURE rise? That could be another factor.

I hope this helps! I would get in touch with the Dr. as soon as possible - They know better than us.

ALSO, be sure to check his urine for ketones- the bi-product of fat burnoff. This could mean other problems causing the rise in blood sugar.

assuming that he is following his diet. has he been sick or had any pain anywhere? infection can also cause the jump in blood sgar levels. get him to the doctor asap and find out diabetes can cause a host of problems that can be serious to dangerous. eyes kidneys circulation and bone infections can occur from high blood sugar levels. better to find out what's going on. if he is not following his diet like he should maybe he ate or drank something before he got home that he shouldn't have? soda sweets etc. try his blood sugar again and see if it has come down that is seriously too high to ignore. if it is still not down to normal get him in to the doc. good luck

Avoid sugar and high amounts of carbohydrates. Eat balanced meals with whole grain carbs at regular times. Losing weight helps control diabetes.

Yikes, 259 is still too high. He needs to be exercising now or walking to burn up those ketones. Take it again and if it is still high, I would suggest you see the doc in the morning. Something else is triggering it. (Did the guys pig out on sweets and soda just before coming home?) You didn't mention his weight. Is it under control? He is fortunate to have such a caring wife.

Tell him to start walking. It's the best way to get blood sugar down in a hurry. He must have had some carb or sugar that brought it up Stess can raise it, so can getting sick Call the doctor and ask.

If he has ketones DO NOT let him do exercises, thats dangerous, if he takes insulin give him a little extra and drink water to flush out the ketones. My son who is 12 has been type 1 since he was 6 and he drs push this no excerses if any ketones are present.
But havin your hubbys go up that high could be lots of things, he might be gettin sick, ate something that might have a late reaction in raising blood sugars, or not enough insulin.
If it doesnt go down by morning give his dr a call but if it just happen and goes away and back to normal he'll be just fine.

The most comprehensive book I have ever read on diabetes, either Type I or II is by Dr. Richard Berstein, title is Dr. Berstein's Diabetes Solution. If you get it be sure to get the revised & updated published in 2007. He is the longest living Type I Diabetic himself, but in his practice treats both types.

Please read pages 224-230. His first question would be why Glipzide when there are better OHA's to control blood sugars that don't kick the pancreas.
