What could happen to a kidney if an obstruction is not detected in time?!

Question: Obstruction as in a kidney stone?

Well, according to my husband's doctor (he's dealing with a kidney stone right now), if the stone obstructs the kidney, it can cause a backup of fluids, infection, and cause your kidney to shut down.

In time for what? You would become so sick and be in so much pain that you would go to the hospital and they would figure it out. You only need one kidney, so if one shuts down you can still live.

it will swell and urine cant drain out of it
you could get a bad infection and blood posioning
if fever, pain or bleeding happens go to the ER

Assuming a kidney stone.

Not too much. As if they start obstructing the urinary tract? You'll know it.

Oh yes, you'll be QUITE aware of it.

You'll have a momentary back flow of urine, and the kidney may shut down for a bit. But the kidney will continue to pump out urine until the obstruction has been pushed out.

One's body can live well on just one kidney at worst.

you could end up in kidney failure. Urine will back up inside the kidney and destroy it

With a kidney stone, it's usually the ureter (the tube that leads from the kidney to the bladder) that gets obstructed. The ureter will expand and cause such a great deal of pain that you'll want to go to the Emergency Room. It's often described as the "the worst pain I've ever experienced"
Most kidney stones don't require surgery and will pass on their own. What they'll do in the ER is give you a pain killer and an IV so that you'll pee more.
