Bilateral Cingulotomy is used when OCD and some other disorders have not responded to: Psychotherapy, Behavior Modification,Medications or Electo-Shock therapy.

It is used as a last resort when the OCD is so severe that it totally impacts on a person's life and nothing else has helped.

Before this is ever considered all avenues of treatment need to be exhausted.

Brain surgery is very dangerous. It is not something that is reversible.

Thank God you got a decent answer. Yahoo Answers really needs to eliminate the health section - too many people with no clue offering their worthless opinions (kaitoboa, Leah, the crusader). Report It

  • WEbMD, but it doesn't exist. you need to control it through meds and therapy.

    yah it's called a lobotomy.

    lol.

Seriously since it's a psychological disorder, you need psychological therapy...a physical procedure can't help a psychological problem.

Leah was right about it being called a lobotomy. However, most so-called "mental" problems are more than just psychological. That is why medication works. As for the lobotomy surgery, they don't do those surgeries anymore, at least not in this country. They haven't performed lobotomies in this country for quite some time now!
