Tom, first of all, slow down. The blood result that you gave from a finger prick is well within limits of someone that is NOT diabetic. A non-diabetic's blood sugar result will normally fall between the levels of 4-7 mmol/l (millimoles per litre).

Having said that, why did your mother feel the need to test your blood sugar level? Are you showing any of the symptoms? These will likely be:

Polyuria - frequent urination.
Polydipsia - increased thirst.
Polyphagia - increased hunger.
Loss of weight ... when you aren't dieting, or trying to lose weight, of course.
Increased lethargy - feeling more tired than you otherwise would feel.
Rashes or itchiness, particularly in the groin, and more of them than you would normally get.
Slowly healing wounds ... and maybe more wounds than you would normally accumulate.
Visual disturbances - i.e., blurred vision.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it might just pay you to take a trip to see your doctor. (Your doctor will know that because your mother is diabetic that you may carry a disposition towards developing it at some point of your life.) I'm sure s/he would carry out a simple blood test to either confirm, or refute, your suspicions. (S/he may ask you to not eat from the night before s/he carries out this test. Don't worry, this is nothing to worry about. It's simply called a fasting blood glucose test. S/he may also carry out what's called a glucose tolerance test. Here you'll be given a very sickly, sweet drink, and your blood sugar level tested at times after.)

Let me assure you, young sir, that if you do have diabetes, this is not the end of the world ... and it's better for treatment to start straight away, otherwise there's a risk that complications could set in, making life even more difficult for you.

Whatever the result of any blood test that your doctor may carry out, if you want someone to talk to, feel free to click on my avatar/photograph and send me an email. I'll be only too pleased to support you.

Best of luck.

I would say that if you are feeling like you might be go see a doctor. If your mom has diabetes then you might. If she doesn't, do you have any of the risk factors: overweight, feel lightheaded, inactive? Then you might. Go see a doctor.

Have your mom take you to the doctor for a test
