I just found out that a friend has MRSA?!

Question: My son has been going to her house to walk her dog after work. Is he at any risk by doing this? He unlocks the door and takes care of the dog, he does not eat or drink anything while there. Should he stop going until her infection is cleared up?

You probably have MRSA somewhere on your skin or in your nose right now. Will you lock your son out of the house?

MRSA is the bacteria. MRSA infection is the condition. It's not as contagious as many people think. Infection can occur in the nose, the eyes, in wounds, in the blood, the urine and the respiratory tract. There can be multiple sites. How likely it is that your son would pick up any methicillin-resistant Staph from your friend can depend on the site of her infection.

For instance, if she has it in her urine, how likely do you think it is that your son would be handling her urine? On the other hand, if the Staph is in her respiratory tract or her nasal cavity and she inadvertently gets sputum on the dog's coat, your son pets the dog and contacts the sputum and touches his own nose or eyes, then he could transmit it to himself. Do you see what I mean? There are a lot of variables and no one-size-fits-all answer.

And is this a new infection or an old one? Those who don't respond to treatment or have gone untreated and symptoms have disappeared don't have active infection. They are considered to be colonized and while this won't harm them, they can still transmit the bacteria. MSRA is pretty much everywhere and most of us have had contact with it at one time without problems.

However, he's your son and I understand that you wish to protect him. Have him stay away until her infection has been treated and she's had three negative recultures.

Yes and Yes. Many people carry this currently in their noses. He may already have it and just be carrying it, but this can be dangerous to you and your family. You should probably have him a checkup for this just in case.

remote possibility that the dog could have it without symptoms...

He should definately stop until her infection has cleared up and I would suggest calling his doctor to see if he needs to be seen. MRSA is EXTREMELY contagious-- I used to work in a docs office and the few times that we had someone with MRSA come in we had to suit up and the patient had to go directly in to a room (and also needed to be completely sanitized when the patient left).

My grandfather just recently passed from MRSA.He contracted it from a "home".It is highly contageous.Unless you have true faith in Jesus, then I would wait until all is cleared and disinfected.Sorry.........

Yes that is VERY VERY contagious! I can't believe your friend hasn't told people to stay away!
That is a very deadly virus.

Get him checked out by a doctor. MRSA is totallly contagious. My dad had it and we had to be really carefull around him.
