They are caused by an inappropriate immune response triggered by exposure to an allergen. It's a protein in their skin and saliva that causes the reactions.
I'm sorry you aren't able to get to have a kitty you want. You could always try taking allergy meds or having allergy shots to overcome your allergies.
Awww that's sad. I love cats. Adopt a naked mole rat. They are ugly and no one wants them but they need love too.
