Can I give blood if I'm anemic?!

Question: If not, why?

Answers: If not, why?

One of the things that are done for blood donors is a mini-physical. This consists of taking your temperature, checking your blood pressure and pulse and checking your red blood cell count. Those who are anemic may not be acceptable donors.

Why? Because as an anemic, you already have deficient hemoglobin in your red blood cells. This is an iron-protein that oxygen binds to. When blood circulates through the lungs, CO2 is exchanged for O2. The O2 binds to hemoglobin.

Since all body tissue and organs require O2, you can easily understand why hemoglobin is important. It may not be safe to donate blood. It will contain red blood cells along with hemoglobin and your anemia may be worsened. But there's no harm in trying and I don't know how severe your anemia is. If you're blood is acceptable, you'll be informed.

it all depends on what your iron count is. if donating through a blood service they will let you know what the ideal number is...i think 37. the number is lower if you are needing to donate for yourself for an upcoming surgery. also even though you might not be eligible one time it doesn't necessarily mean you can do it the next.

Anemia is a deficiency of hemoglobin, a molecule inside red blood cells (RBCs). As hemoglobin is what carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues, anemia can lead to hypoxia (lack of oxygen) in organs. Since all human cells depend on oxygen for survival, varying degrees of anemia can have a wide range of clinical consequences.
Your hemoglobin must be at or above 12.5 g/dL and your hematocrit must be at or above 38% to be eligible to donate blood.
Even though your RBCs will regenerate after you give blood, that takes several weeks, and even healthy people without anemia are only allowed to donate blood no more than every 8 weeks.

no you cant becoz it will make your condition worse ,your anaemia will get more severe and u could get complications due to more hypoxia ,u need to be treated first anaemia is a serious thing people sometimes underestimate it
