Type 2 diabetes is caused by a combination of poor diet, sedentary lifestyle and in some cases a genetic predisposition.

If you have diabetes in your family you are more likely to get the disease. It can be at least postponed by eating a healthy balanced diet and exercising regularly.

This link goes to the American Diabetes Association home page. They have tons of information as well as a risk assessment test (the link is near the upper right corner)

Hope this helps

Type II can be caused by obesity and other factors. You can develop diabetes if:

* Your body does not respond properly to insulin, making it difficult for your cells to get sugar from the blood to make energy. This is called insulin resistance.
* Your pancreas does not make enough insulin.

Your weight, how much physical activity you get, and your family history all affect the way your body responds to insulin. If you are overweight, get little or no exercise, or have family members with diabetes, you have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes.

Warning factors are itching hands, rapid weight loss, frequent trips to the bathroom and excessive thirst.

Scientists are trying to figure out what it is that causes type 1 diabetes, and I am pretty sure that it is genetic. Type 2, however, is where you are obese and have to make sure your blood sugars are in check.
There isn't really a warning.
If you are worried that you might have diabetes or are experiencing symptoms or anything like that the best thing for you to do would be to go to the doctor and get tested for diabetes.
If you don't have a family history of diabetes you shouldn't have any reason to be too worried unless you are seriously over weight.

type 2 is obesity related, type 1 they're not entirely sure of the cause. a lot of people say it's hereditary, but in my case, no one from my father or mothers side has diabetes, i'm the first. a lot of other people think it has to do with a viral infection, i mean a buddy of mine got a really bad eye infection, and then immediately after developed diabetes, myself, i got really sick in october 2007, and then right after that, i to started having the symptoms, so who really knows

Genetics is a big factor. Obesity, age, and a multitude of other factors contribute.

My brother is a young, active, healthy male. He was 5 days shy of his 21st birthday when he was diagnosed. Not overweight, ate healthy.... but my family has a STRONG history of the disease.
