Those who take COUMADIN, what kind of Diet should have?!

Question: if you start on Coumadin do not radically change your diet. You should keep your diet the same as before you were on Coumadin. If you totally stop eating leafy greens or go overboard you can have problems with your blood levels of vitamin K. For example, if you eat broccoli once a week, continue to do so. This is contrary to advice given years ago that you should not eat any foods high in vit K

  • I know that blood thinners like aspirin should be avoided. Avoid foods that have lots of vitamin K and thicken the blood like cabbage.

Stay away from greens as a rule. Broccoli, turnips greens, and salad, and the like will all thicken your blood which will lower your INR. The higher your INR, the thinner your blood. Depending on why you take coumadin, your INR will need to stay within a certain range. Also, green tea can possibly lower INR. Ask your doctor for specific guidelines and complete diet info.

If I knew what coumadin was I might be able to help you?

There are no specific things to avoid as far as food goes. If you take over the counter meds, always check with the pharmacist on duty. Alcohol and coumadin do not go together at all. Some antibiotics can inerfere with the clotting mechanism as well so make sure your caregiver knows you are on coumadin.

    No grapefruit diet.
