Is pancreatic cancer associated with alchoholism?!

Question: First of all, I'm sorry that Patrick Swayze is sick, however it came about. But, my late mother loved all of his movies, but complained to me that he had always admitted he that was an active alchoholic. I drink, and at times have wrestled with binge drinking, so don't throw me under the bus. This isn't like saying an alchoholic is dying of cirrohsis, is it?

Chronic pancreatitis may be a risk factor for pancreatic cancer. Chronic pancreatitis is often a result of alcoholism. however alcoholism has not been identified as a direct cause of pancreatic cancer. Cigarette smoking is a risk factor.

Here is some info on the risk factors for pancreatic cancer:

not that I know of. My moms best friend died from this and she lived 3 months from when she was first diagnosed. She was not an alcoholic but she did smoke! This is the worst there is, no recovery usually and death is quick. I don't think anyone knows..its just bad luck I think!

No, there is no data to support any alcohol consumption to be a predetermining factor in Pancreatic cancer.
Also there are as many variences in the timeline of this disease. My brother was diagnosed and he was not a candidate for the whipple surgery but he lead a really good quality life for two years and never lost weight or felt ill until the final week.
He had a very peaceful death and I just want people to know that those whom I have known who had the surgery have lived and are still living. So everyone's case is different and perhaps Patrick will be a positive outcome. In other words if caught in time for surgery it is not a death sentence. And if his wife wants to feed him camel's testicles (as I read of someone saying how awful it was that she was feeding him fat foods)He is getting tons of love- that will help and always does.

only a few days ago the researchers studied 373 patients, mostly men with alcoholism, who had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. These patients had a median age of only 40 years. The minimum follow-up was 2 years and the maximum slightly over 9 years. They calculated the sex standardized incidence ratio (SIR) for pancreatic cancer. The SIR is ?the ratio of the number of observed cases of pancreatic cancer in this cohort to the number of expected cases, as provided by the French National Cancer Register?. There were only 4 cases of pancreatic cancer in this study but this represented 1.1% of the population with pancreatitis. The expected number of cases was 0.15 and the SIR was 26.7, which is an estimate of the excess risk of pancreatic cancer in this population. These authors concluded that ?Patients with chronic pancreatitis have a markedly increased risk of pancreatic cancer compared with the general population?.

I can tell you not all the time because my mother passed away last September from it and she neither drank or smoked ever. She was diagnosed and three months later she was gone. She was 90 years old and the Doctor told us usually by the time you are diagnosed with this kind of cancer it is to late for anything to help.
