Is he too young to feel the effects of second hand smoke?!

Question: My husband is only 20 but for the last 9 months or so he's been complaining about not being able to breathe. He says he feels pressure on his chest and that when he tries to take a deep breathe it hurts and he can't. He feels like he's always short of breathe and his lungs hurt all the time. He's not in the best of shape but hes not obese either. I guess that could be it but I'm wondering if second hand smoke could be a factor? All the adults in his life growing up smoked. He's been breathing it in since birth. Is he too young to feel it's effects?

These are not symptoms of second hand smoke - they are symptoms of pleurisy or fluid between the lungs and the chest cavity. He should be able to get this cleared up if he goes to the doctor.

He should see a doctor right away for a chest x-ray. Second hand smoke is harmful but his symptoms definitely need to checked out. Good luck.

I doubt if second hand smoke is the cause. Sounds like COPD or phenomena.

Get him the the doctor ASAP. Phenomena can kill you.

No, not too young. We had a 13 yr old girl in the hospital the other day who had developed emphysema because her parents smoke so much. I do not know what may be wrong with your husband, He should be checked out by a medical professional.

Age is not Big Factor! Smoking cigarette, cigars, Chinese Fire Works, etc., is NOT good for the us whether we smoke or second hand smoke! From your description, I would have him see an Internal Medicine Doctor and have that breathing dificulty checked! I've heard alot of elders say its better to check early instead of too late.

The length of your husband's symptoms is an important factor in him getting to the doctor as soon as he can be seen. He needs to relate all of the symptoms to him (you might go along to make sure he doesn't just fluff over them)

NO even babies can feel the effects!
it could be a serious health problem expecially in the chest thats danguraous girl
have him see a docter amiddiatly

I suspect this might have been affected by secondhand smoke, but this has to be a sign of something more serious. Hopefully he is now in a smoke-free environment. He needs to see a doctor though. Only a doctor can truly diagnose what is wrong.
