There has been an upper respiratory infection making the rounds this year that hangs on like a bad reputation. My friend has been coughing over 2 months! Without knowing what the second medication is, I can't give you specific advice but here are some ideas:
If it's post nasal drainage causing the cough, try phenlephrine or psuedoephedrine decongestant to stop the drip (that's what I had, over it in a week).
If it's irritation in the airways in your lungs(chest pain when you cough, thick mucus expectorated) try dextromethorphan cough suppressant. There is a syrup brand name Delsym which lasts 12 hours. If that doesn't work, ask the doctor about some codeine to use at bedtime so you can sleep. An inhaler with a bronchodilator such as albuterol could possibly be helpful if you have trouble clearing the mucus-that is also a prescription drug.
In either of these cases the big problem is irritation and inflammation-every cough contributes more to the problem. If you can stop the cough it gives the mucus membranes a chance to heal.

you have probably some residual irritation left, that can take as long as 6 weeks to go. As long as you are not bringing up nasty mucus, the infection should be gone. you might ask the doctor for a ventolin inhaler, in case the cough keeps you awake at night, that should help.

If you smoke it will last much longer too. Give it time unless it seems like an infection.

bad strain, try and exercise to get your lungs cleared up

Looks like you may have first-stage COPD. Looks like chronic bronchitis is causing the cough.
