An epidemic can effect the US and the world in a variety of ways. The first thing to ask is: What kind of epidemic are you dealing with?
Worldwide epidemic of ringworm? That's gross, but it's not that big of a problem.
Worldwide epidemic of ebola? You're in a world of hurt.
Health influences a lot of things, and in terms of major effects, economic impact can be a big one.
If you have a pandemic of a really serious illness, that can impact the economy because people are too sick to work, too sick to travel, too sick to go shopping, etc.
If you have a pandemic of chronic conditions, that can be an economic problem, too. Consider obesity for example. If people are really obese, they may either be unable to perform certain work duties or need more days off to deal with their associated conditions. When they become ill, their care may take a lot longer, which will cost more.
