A papoose board?!

Question: My best friend is 16 and has just been admitted to hospital with anorexia. Shes very very thin and within danger or dying now. Im so scared for her.

Her dad, when he rang me up, said they were going to restrain her to put a feeding tube in. He said it was a gastro-nasal one. What does this mean? He also mentioned something about a papoose board? I sorta know what one is, but couldnt they just put her to sleep to put it in? It's killing me to know what horrible things are happening to her....please help.

Oh, I feel so sad for you and your friend!

I've had a nasal-gastric tube and it SUX!!! There's a reason they are going to hold her down on a papoose board to do this but oh how embarassing for her!! I hate doctors!

They take a narrow tube and stick it up one of your nostrils. They guide it down through your throat and into your stomach. It feels like you can't breathe and it makes your eyes water. I had bloody noses for a long time afterward (I had to have mine for a test where they shot barium thru the tube into my small intestine, but it's the same tube no matter what they're doing with it).
I was told I couldn't be sedated while they put in the tube because they needed me to swallow the tube down when they said "Swallow". I think that's BS but what do I know?

However, once it's in it's not bad, and putting it in doesn't take much time--maybe 5 to 7 min.

I did a google search and found these websites for friends of people with eating disorders:

The above answer is correct. A papoose board is molded to the shape of the persons body and has restraints at the wrists, ankles, and abdomen to keep the person from pulling out the NG tube. Sorry about your friend, I hope she makes it.
