It is a metabolic (the process that changes food and drink into useable nutrients for the body) syndrome that occurs after someone has been without food for a bit and then starts eating again or being fed again. Basically, the body goes a little nuts and doesn't process food and fluids the way its supposed to.

It is treatable with glucose (sugar solution), thiamine (a B vitamin) and monitoring of electrolytes.

It can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated right away. However it sounds like they know what it is, so I'm sure they are treating your friend for it.

I got this information from the link the person above provided. I just broke it down into words that I think that you can understand.

I'm sure your friend will be fine, they know what it is and that is huge. I'm sure he/she is being treated for it correctly.

I hope I've been of help.

Sorry to break this to you, but yes. You can get treatments! I don't understand it but follow this link and tell your parents to get the treatment for you!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refeeding_s...

Basically what has happened is she either hasnt ate for the last couple weeks or has had NO sugar. Then she ate a lot, and basically her digestive system cant handle these foods because it hasnt in a long time.

Its actually not a rare disease at all. A lot of cancer patients go through this as does anyone who is being feed by a feeding tube or IV. Anorexias have this problem during their recovery. And several other situations.

So the food she is eating is not being digested right, That means that her electrolyes, glucose levels and other chemicals are going to jump all over the place.

It can be fatal if not realized or treated, and I am really not sure if the diabetic factors in any danger.

The treatment is basically just supplementing things like glucose and the electrolytes will controlling the diet. You basically have to be reinduced to the digestive system in certain ways, much the way you would a baby learning to eat.

She will be working with her docs and a dietiticion to help get past this.
