Are type 1 diabetics ALWAYS diabetic?!

Question: I've been a diabetic for 12 years and I just read a post about how type 1 diabetics are always born with the disease. I messaged the user and told them that no type 1 diabetics are not necessarily born with the disease. They responded by saying that all type 1 diabetics are born with the disease however it just 'pops up' anytime. I'm positive that this statement is false. Is it?

No. You are not born with type 1 diabetes. If that was true, they could tell us if we would get diabetes later in life when we were babies. There is lots of misinformation out there.

that is just about the dumest thing i have ever heard type 1 diabetes used to be classified as juvenile diabetes now its classified as anyone who has the diabetes type that requires the insulin shots and is harder to control

yes it is false. Type 1 diabetes can also occur from traumatic injury to the pancreas. Anything that causes the body to stop producing insulin, results in type 1 diabetes, or insulin dependant diabetes.

Yes to type 1 being forever diabetic.
No to being born with the disease.

They say that with type 1 the pancreas may have been hurt by a virus at some time. Some dr say while still in the womb, others say later in life. It is an ongoing argument.

They are half right. Type 1 used to be called Juvenile Diabetes. It was thought to be genetic and brought on by their bodies inability to produce enough insulin. Type 2 was called adult onset diabetes and related to poor diet and exercise and the bodies inability to accept the high glucose levels into the cells. Type 1 required insulin and Type 2 needed oral medications. However with todays poor diets and low activity both types are more prevalent. Diabetes is classified now as IDDM(Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) and NIDDM(Non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus)

I see what you're saying. I was having this conversation with my husband the other day, discussing that the leading theory is that I may have gotten a virus before I was diagnosed that caused the auto-immune response that destroyed my beta cells. But does everyone who gets that virus become diabetic? What if lots of people got the virus, but I had something genetically that let the virus trigger the diabetes? And would I have been "doomed" to get diabetes no matter what? The fact is that we just don't know enough about it, I'm afraid. They've been researching this for decades, and it's just hard to get a consistent pattern with people. So we wait!

No...my BG was always fine until my diagnosis in Feb of 2006. Whoever wrote that article was a total unknowing idiot. I am agreeing with you...I think it is false as well.

Contrary to what most people are saying, I think that could be true! You're not born diabetic as such, but it's likely we're born with a genetic print that is just waiting for a trigger. We could go decades, or maybe our whole lives, without meeting the trigger that causes the auto-immune reaction... or we may get a virus (Or whatever causes T1 D - we don't know for sure yet) at a young age and be diabetic from then on.

To all who think you can cure diabetes with diet and exercise... please be aware that we're talking about type 1 diabetes which is an auto-immune disease and can happen to ANYONE at any time, regardless of their diet and exercise levels. It is *not* curable... yet! A type 1 diabetic can not produce their own insulin. They will be on insulin injections or a pump for the rest of their lives... or at least until some wonderful people come up with a cure!

i got diabetes when i was seven. i think this person doesn't know what there talking about

also i dont think the last answer was correct, i have an auto ammune problem it WAS NOT in my genes, none of my family has had it

google it ask a docter surgeon nurse

It amazes me that people who have type 1 diabetes know very little about it. I encourage anyone who has type 1 diabetes to get as much information on it as they can. It is a life changing disease that needs to be monitored very closely. I am a type 1 diabetic and have been needle dependent for over 16 years. I would recommend on taking classes and your medical insurance will pay for them. Mine did.

nope you can change it with weight, and diet.
