I just played some volleyball and I'm not used to it.
There are dark red spots on my hand and arm, exactly where I hit the ball. It did hurt but it doesn't and I'm not concerned about this at all, I'm just curious...
Why exactly do this red spots show up?

Busted capillaries. You got it bang on. Happens often until your skin gets used to the contact with the ball. Its nothing to be worried about (I see you are not).
broken blood vessels... most likely caused from the impact of the ball.... they should heal and go away with in a week........
It looks like a start to a bruise dumbass, bursted...is that even a word? Do you know what a bruise is?
You are going to have some nice bruises!
The ball has hit your skin so hard in a large area so instead of just a bruise appearing you are seeing the broken cappilaries, like you said, that will congel to form mighty bruises.
