I just had surgery and my stitches are itching, what to do?!

Question: Please, please, please do not put anything on your stiches without checking with your surgeon. I notice that several people have suggested a couple of different ointments which as a pharmacist I wouldn't recommend.
Hydrocortisone can actually impede healing and cause thinning of the skin and could cause more damage. Neosporin contains antibiotics to fight infection but doesn't contain any ingredient to stop the itching.
The best solution would be a course of antihistamine tablets or application of an antihistamine ointment, but you'll need to double check with your surgeon to make sure it won't interfere with the healing process or any other medicines you might be taking.

i just pored peroxide on it dunno if your supposed to or not but it burned and then nothin

I've had hart surgery and I have a foot long scar. No matter what don't scratch the scar. It will stop itching soon and begin to heal gradually.

yeah, they itch when they are healing. try to leave it alone. but if you must scratch, be gentle.

Ugh! I've had several surgeries with stitches and/or staples. It's SO annoying, but the good news is that it's a sign that you're healing. You basically have to grin and bear it. After the surgeon removes them you can put some antihistamine ointment or even lotion on to ease the itching. I'd ask the surgeon before doing any of these things before the stitches come out because of risk of infection in addition to the wound not getting the air it needs to heal properly. I still have scars that get itchy sometimes. Happy healing!

Try putting some Neosporin on the stitches. But make sure to keep them clean as to not get infection. Also try some hydrocortisone cream (anti-itch cream) or maybe take some Benedryl ( it helps with cortisol production which causes itching). Check with your doctor or pharmacist because everyone is different in what they can do or take-you don't need any medication interactions.

gently rub your skin with clean hands.
