How serious is it?!

Question: I had some lab work done the other day and when my doctor's office called today they told me my blood sugar (after fasting for 12 hours) was 230. Is this something I should be concerned about?

my husband and I are both diabetic--we eat high protein, low fat-low to moderate carbohydrates, you are considered diabetic. American Diabetes Association has web site with all information you need. They can tell you the list of bad carbs that you should limit or avoid. Things like, corn, white bread, some pasta--please go there and get correct information. Right now, it sounds like you can change your diet and keep it under control--watch out for the sugar-free items, some contain higher fat or salt, sugar alcohol sometimes can send blood sugar soaring in some people---in that case (like my husband) it is better to eat a SMALL portion of something sweetened with sugar than something containing sugar alcohol. Not getting it under control by diet, exercise, meds (if needed) can lead to heart problems and such. Take very good care of your feet, make sure you keep them soft (lotion) injury free, correct shoe sizes, they do make socks for diabetics. My husband is in the hospital now, and he is going to have to have his left leg removed up to the knee because he had a sore on foot that didn't & wouldn't heal.

yes that is high
70 to 112 is normal
dont eat or drink anything with sugar in it
what your potatoes and starches. If over wt lose
go back to the doctor for advice and possibly medications

This could be a sign of pre-diabetes. You will want to follow up with you doctor and discuss possible options such as diet modification and weight loss (if you are overweight). In the mean time be mind full of your sugar intake and eating 5-6 small meals a day to keep you blood sugar more level.

Yes it is.

Ya know, you'd think the Dr would tell you all you need on the phone when they call! Mine called to tell me the SAME exact thing- I think mine was 226 or 236 something like that. They had me come back in for a follow up, and it was 205 the second time..... Call them back and see what you should do!

not a doc but I've been a diabetic for 42 years.type 1. normal is 90 to 120. You could be a type 2. Any diabetes is serious

If that was a, "Fasting Blood Sugar", then you've got a very serious problem. Talk to your Dr. about ways of bringing it under control. This is a life or death issue.
