A question concerning herpes?!

Question: i have only slept with two people my whole life. i lost my virginity to my friend, we slept together 3 times and then 6 months later i got engaged and married to my now 2 1/2 yr husband...3 months ago i got an infection that included almost all the symptoms or herpes..but i havent had any symptoms since, my husband has never had any sypmtoms at all ...

can herpes lay dormant for more then 2 years?
can you get it while using a condom?
if a doctor thought you were positive, wouldnt he have to contact someone?
if a swab came back positive wouldnt they contact you?
can it be passed through towel use?
should i sanitize my tub after using it?
should i wash my clothes seperately?
should i have my own bar of soap?

sorry for so many questions and thanks for your help

YES - it can lay dormant for many many years....
in you or your husband....

A condom only protects the penis shaft from the vaginal walls - and as you're seeing - it's not in your vaginal walls - as the sores were probably not on his penis shaft (scrotum maybe?) so yes, a condom is mostly useless against herpes.

A doctor will only share the results with YOU

A swab test is pretty accurate....but a blood test is more accurate

Yes - a wet towel can hold the virus for about 3 hours - so don't reuse your washcloths & towels

There's no need to wash your things seperately - as the virus only lives about 3 hours on wet objects....and the washing soap has some virus-killing ability in it

Soap is self-cleaning

can herpes lay dormant for more then 2 years? Yes, some people never show symptoms at all.

can you get it while using a condom? Yes. Herpes is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, not through bodily fluids. Since a condom doesn't cover everything down there, condoms are not 100% effective.

if a doctor thought you were positive, wouldnt he have to contact someone? No. HSV and HPV are viruses that are not recorded by the CDC. In fact, if your doctor told someone, he would be in violation of HIPAA.

if a swab came back positive wouldnt they contact you? Yes, they should. Most doctors, however, never test for HSV even when you ask for a COMPLETE STD test.

can it be passed through towel use? NO. It would be very rare for the virus to live that long outside the body.

should i sanitize my tub after using it? General cleanliness is a good idea, but you don't have to become OCD about germs even if you have Herpes.'

should i wash my clothes seperately? No

should i have my own bar of soap? No

In general, if you have Herpes, you need to let your husband know. He should also get tested. If he wants to avoid getting Herpes (if you have it) then you need to 1) use a suprressant medication called Valtrex 2) Refrain from oral sex without protection 3) Don't have sex during outbreaks. However, there is still a chance of transmission.

I am engaged to a man who doesn't have it, and he hasn't shown any symptoms in the last year we have been together. It really depends on luck on whether or not someone gets it. You don't have to be promiscous.

Two thumbs up to Agape; she is right on.
