type 1 causes the common cold sore, usualy around lips or on the lips....type 2 is mainly associated with genital herpes and is sexualy transmited

Type 1 prefers to live on the face - on the mouth it causes cold sores...in the eye it looks like pinkeye...in the nose it looks like cold sores
You can get type 1 on the genitals also - but it usually won't recurr as often since it doesn't like to be downstairs...

Type 2 prefers the genitals - causes patches of white blisters that ooze and HURT like hell because of the location (clothes, urine & sitting aggrivate it!) - and it usually causes mouth sores if caught in the mouth and doesn't usually recurr (I got it in my mouth about 15 years ago....from oral sex....and I had what felt like cancer sores under my tongue and on my tongue - and I never saw another sign of it at all!)

BOTH are contagious from the 1st tingle or itch!! until the sores scab & the scab falls off..... so it's very contagious and there's less than a 2% chance of transmission if you know your symptoms.
My genital outbreaks have gotten shorter & shorter thru the years....now about 3 days - I was recently turned on to L-Lysine and taking 1000mg every time I eat....the last outbreak was over in less than 24 hours!

type 1 and type 2 are caused by the same virus just located in different areas but both types can be passed on to the mouth, genitals and other areas of the body. type one generally happens around the mouth and is what cases cold sores. this type can also be passed to the genitals via oral sex. type 2 is usually located on the genitals and can also be passed to other parts of the body. length can depend on sevarity as well as the symptoms. if i had to say the cold sore type would be the "better" one to have. because u wouldn't have to deal with the symptoms of the genital type which can be painful at times. its actually common (70-80% of the population has the oral type) and its really contagious while there is an outbreak. the oral type for me can last a week with using things like Abreva to help heal it.
symptoms for the genital type on the first outbreak are mild flu like symptoms (achy muscles and fever), swollen genital glands and or sollen genitals, itchihng, burning and or tingeling sensation, trouble peeing or burning when u pee, bladder infections an also be a symptom but not always.
symptoms of the oral type are usually itchy dry skin, burning or tingleling sensation all at the site of the outbreak. then a cut or sore would appear usually around the mouth but can happen inside the mouth as well. the sores can also affect the nose and eyes and can be passed to the genitals.
mostly u can tellu have it just by judgning what symptoms u have the symptoms are common to have on a first outbreak. for the genital type the itching and burning or tingeling is usually when u would know or if u break out in blisters or sores.
