This condition must have already been treated, as if left it is rapidly fatal. A chest drain is inserted into the damaged lung which takes the pressure of and allows the lung to re-inflate.
The treatment in hospital is to insert a needle and let out the air or the blood causing the tension.
Recovery usually 100%
A tension pneumothorax happens when air enters the space between the lung and the ribcage. This means that the lung has no room to inflate, and collapses. To treat it doctors will insert a needle or tube into the area betwen the lung and ribcage to remove the air - this allows the lung to re-inflate.
As for the chance of survival, that all depends on your cousin's injuries I'm afraid.
Good luck, hope she comes good soon x
To treat a pneumothorax a chest tube is inserted bewteen the ribs into the pleural space. This allows the air to escape. Recovery is usually 100%, but some people do experience reoccurance and have to have another tube put it or be closely monitored to make sure it does not get bigger. A very large pneumothroax can cause the lung to collapse.
