If an outbreak of herpes is not present can you get a blood test to determine fo!

Question: when I was 17 i went to the drs becasue "something was not right" when I was there the drs said he "thought" i had herpes but could not be sure because I had them on both sides of my vagina, he said normally the the outbeak is only on 1 side. he did testing and gave me a gel that would help the extreme discomfort... because I was under age they would have gave my mom the results (because she took me) my mom was very ashamed & she never told me what they said for sure.
I dont really know what an outbreak is, i dont know if i've ever really had one... im 25 now, if I go to the drs. can they tell bith a blood test?

Yes, there's a blood test you can get done where they chk for the antibodies of herpes and they chk both kinds HSV-1 and HSV-2 but most insurances don't cover it and I think it's like $100 for the test but you can go to a County health clinic and get it cheaper the results should come back with in 1 week it's pretty fast and it makes you know for sure cause there is no way the blood test is wrong!!
Oh, it's like an HIV test....and the 1st person who posted an answer that is not true I know for a fact I worked a community clinic and people would request them but because it's expensive and most insurances don't cover them they don't get them YOU DO NOT NECESSARILY HAVE TO HAVE AN OUTBREAK OR A LESION, HERPES IS A VIRUS YOU CAN HAVE A BLOOD TEST DONE TO CHK!!

unfortunately no, the virus lives in the nervous system, not in the blood stream. You have to wait for another outbreak and have the lesions cultured.

They will have to do a pap smear on you to tell. Here is a link to help you

Yes they can because there is no cure for herpes. If you have sex with anyone, use a condom because you can pass it on even without an out break.

the first answer is correct

Yes. Depending on where you live and what tests are offered at the laboratories in your area.

Until recently there was no way to discern between HSV-1 and HSV-2 with blood tests, making them practically irrelevant.

The first reliable type-specific diagnostic test to become available was the western blot. This is a very sophisticated laboratory test which is able to differentiate accurately and reliably between HSV-1 and HSV-2 infections. This test is technically difficult, and is only available through a small number of laboratories, mostly research laboratories.

There are now a number of simple commercially available ELISA tests for type-specific HSV infection. These tests are relatively simple to perform in the laboratory, and are now being produced by a number of companies. The reliability and reproducibility of these tests varies, and may be dependent upon the experience of the particular laboratory. The most appropriate test for use in particular situations has yet to be determined. Some of the tests only detect HSV-2 infections, others are able to detect both HSV-2 and HSV-1 infections.

I am not sure about the cost of these tests in the U.S. I am from Ontario and if a person wants type specific serology they can get a requisition form from their doctor, take it to a public laboratory and it costs around $100.00.

yes .
