If you ate carbs before your fasting blucose blood test, would it appear that yo!

Question: I am pregnant was told by my doctor not to fast before the test. Then got to the appointment and found out (of course) that I needed to have fasted. They told me to take the test anyway and then if it came back with a high glucose level that I would have to repeat the test. (I had just eaten a piece of cake about 30 min. before). Blood test came out negative for diabetes. I think it was a little bit higher than it would have been, but it was within the normal range. I had a friend who took the test in the morning before breakfast and hers came out that she had diabetes. I think if you have diabetes then it will show up, but if you don't then you shouldn't worry. I was told by the lab tech that if I hadn't had a problem with sugar before then eating before the test shouldn't affect it too much. Still it is probably best to follow the instructions given for the test.

Yes, but why would you do that? Are you trying to gain attention?

I think if you eat anything before your glucose blood test it shows the need for further testing. I chewed a piece of gum before mine (just not thinking), big mistake.

Carbs convert to glucose which enters your blood. A Hb1A1C test (generally a fasting test) measures the percentage of Glucose in your blood. What you get is the percentage glucose in your blood over the last 90 days. So eating carbs just before this test will not affect the average that much.

However, your daily blood glucose can be very much affected by eating carbs a few minutes before take a reading. The reading can be so high that definitely you would be considered a solid diabetic even if your HbA1C test give a very different result.

Best Wishes.

Yes, it would ruin a fasting glucose test.
