How do heart attacks happen?!

Question: I'm just curious...

Answers: I'm just curious...

They usually occur when a piece of plaque breaks off in an artery and a blood clot forms and blocks an artery feeding blood to the heart. This deprives the cells in the affected area of the heart of necessary oxygen causing that part of the heart to die. If the person is lucky it does not damage the heart to the point of causing death. I know because I am a survivor.

Basically your heart is supplied by 3 main arteries. Fatty deposits build up in these arteries and when one of these ruptures a clot can form. The clot the blocks the blood supply from beyond that point. So depending on where the clot forms can have a significant impact on how much of the heart is damaged. The left main stem provides most the hearts blood supply, a clot here will most likely result in death.

Clogged coronary artery stopping blood flow to part of the heart.
