I'm sorry to hear that your brother is having these symptoms. Alcohol does not cause hepatitis C, but alcohol when coupled with hep c will cause the damage to the liver to occur much quicker. He has probably had hep c for many years, but since the liver is very tough, it often shows no symptoms unless the doctors does tests looking for abnormal blood tests. These are the ways you can catch hep c (HCV):
Blood transfusion or solid organ transplant before 1992, tattoos or piercings with unsterile equipment, if he received clotting factors before 1987, IV drug use even if only one time years ago, pneumatic vaccinations given by the military (usually Vietnam Vet era), kidney dialysis, sharing toothbrushes or razors with someone who is infected even if they don't know it yet, snorting drugs, mother to child transmission, and high risk sexual behavior such as rough sex or kinky sex or MSM (where blood may be involved).
Your brother is suffering from ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity). He must be on a strict sodium free diet. Hopefully he is under the care of a good gastroenterologist or hepatologist. Best wishes to you & your brother.

yeah it happens..

no, hcv is a blood born disease- he must of somehow came into contact with an hcv infected persons blood. that blood had to enter his direct bloodstream.

there are millions of ways one can get hcv, it's not always through shooting or snorting drugs. it can be something as seemingly innocent as going to the dentist before 1995. veterans have a high chance of hcv infection via jetshot gun.

hcv is not caused by alcohol it is caused by a virus. drinking only makes the liver damage (and other bi-directional diseases) worse much faster.
