Why did they change the name of STD's to STI's??!

Question: If you ask me, this just leads to needless confusion among the general population.

Are the powers at be trying to make STDs seem not as serious? If so, that's the wrong idea.

A sexually transmitted *disease* sounds a lot more ominous than an infection.

When the average layman thinks of an infection, they might think of a wart, or what happens to your finger if you don't dig out a splinter.

Does anyone know?

Disease and infection are not the same thing. A disease is something that can occur spontaneously in the sufferer and isn't necessarily caught through virus or bacterial contagion.

Cancer is a 'disease' but you can't transmit it to another person. Only infections can be transmitted directly from person to person, hence the name change.

Because they are not all diseases, a lot of them are infections. They are trying to be politically correct.

I'm glad you posted this because I did not know they changed the name and I'm 24...haha

Someone posted a couple days ago about an STI and I thought it was a spelling mistake...

...they didn't. There is a difference between a disease and an infection. You can get sexually transmited infections. like chlamydia or HPV. STDs are like HIV and aids.
There still just as dangerous because they can lead to more serious health problems.

Because not all of the STI's are actually diseases, some are viruses.
