Why is a cool mist humidifier better for croup than a warm mist humidifier?!

Question: My kids have bronchitis and croup and the dr. recommended we use one. I was just curious why a warm mist humidifier wouldn't work.

croup is a viral inflamatory process. the cool air and humidity reduces the swelling and eliminates the stridor/ cough.

warm mist humidifiers also grow bacteria....

for croup its a warm one.. if he has it really bad a blast of really cold air from outside helps.. my son had croup really bad and i called the doctor... he told me to ride with the window down on the way there (in the winter) and if he stops coughing to turn around and go home.. and it worked... but he said to try steam from the shower first.. so i hope this helps

i work in healthcare, and i would recommend a cool mist. warm or hot air increases the swelling in the airways, so avoid that. the only problem with a humidifier whether it be hot or cold, is that they are GERM PACKERS. be sure to wash and change it every 3 months if you are using continuously. good luck
