I have hepatitis C and take percocet for various pain. Bad?!

Question: I am not prescribed percocet but get it from a friend and take it daily. Now I'm stupidly addicted. I'm going to see my Dr. next week to check on the hep C, and was advised by a nurse NOT to tell the Dr i am taking perc. I have no insurance and commonly self-medicate. I require something for pain tho, and I've taken tons of Advil daily with little effect, then discovered perc. Should I tell him? I was told he may not help me with pain-management if I do. You can't take a bunch of Tylenol and Advil with hep C, and the perc has only a small amount of Tylenol in it and it much more helpful for pain. It allows me to get evryday and get through it. Otherwise, I need to lay down alot and rest. I just don't have the time for that! I need to function. Any suggestions or experiences?

I myself am a nurse, and really, I know it seems scary and could potentially do more harm, but you need to tell your doctor about the percocet. I have never heard of a doctor that wouldnt help you because you were self medicating with someone elses meds. Especially if you have no insurance, in all reality, what can he expect. I would tell him, and perhaps your honsesty will go a long way with him. :o)

In the end....if you dont tell him, you are only harming yourself.

Tell your doctor. You are doing yourself more harm than good with taking all that Tylenol. Your doctor can prescribe something that is better for long term relief of pain and doesn't have Tylenol in it.

Percocet should not be taken for the simple reason that it can add to liver damage. You should never take someone Else's medicine for any reason whatever. You say you do not have time to lay down and rest.Is your life worth so little? Fatigue will certainly worsen pain. Please tell your doctor otherwise how will he or she be able to understand what has been happening. Other things that may help heat pack or warm bath with Epsom salts Pain relieving ointments. Stretching may hellp and also massage will enhance the circulation.

The nurse should have the license pulled for giving you the perc to begin with. The reason for the nurse telling you that, the MD will ask where you got it. You should always advise your MD, with complete confidentiality, what and how much meds you take, and for what condition you take them. Many meds that are available OTC will interact with scripted meds. Tell him if you want to live a long and happy life.

Most pain relievers affect the liver. Over the counter ones and prescription. The only one that won't is codeine. You MUST tell the doc you have been taking the perocet. It will probably make your liver emzynes reading high. He's gonna want to know what you have been doing. He's not gonna send you to jail, but you have to tell him. Other wise it senseless to even go for a check up. Be truthful.
