I have a nasty cold too and right now, I just want something that works - I could care less how it tastes. :)
Dimetapp tastes pretty good, but Nyquil works. Don't get the original flavor though - it's nasty. If you get that one, swallow water or soda as a chaser as you're gonna need it.

ETA to answer your second question: You DO need a prescription for a prescription cough medicine, but there's so much out there on the market that's very good and will make you feel better. I would talk with the pharmacist and see what he/she recommends. My doctor likes Nyquil for nighttime and Delsym for during the day.

Delsym isn't too bad and it works great. They have an orange and grape flavor.
