I am diabetic. Is Special K too many starches or carbs?!

Question: I ate two cups of Special K, 2 packets of Splenda and 2% milk and my glucose went to 279. I thought the two cups of cereal equalled maybe 3 exchanges of carbs and the splenda was free. Where am I wrong? Do I have to give up cereal? The label states: 1 serving is 1 cup, 22 grams of carbs, 18 grams of other carbs and 4 grams of sugar. It's has the lowest sugar amount of any cereal I enjoy.

We don't count grams of sugar. We count carbs.
That cereal is 40 carbs per cup. That's not too bad but double that and you have 80 carbs in just the cereal.
This is the worst breakfast a person with diabetes should have. The ADA pushed this kind of diet for years. I am not sure if they still are.Breakfast is a good time to get protein.Try eggs with veggies in them.
Cottage cheese with fruit.Last night's left overs.1-1/2 cups oatmeal.[ complex carbs.]
You will be surprised to find some of the kids cereals lower in carbs than the so called healthy ones.
In the morning our sugars can raise very fast.Just keep an eye on it.
Make an appointment with a dietitian.
Read diabetes magazines.
Make sure you are seeing an endocrinologist not a GP.
Good luck.

Special K has more starch. You need a cereal that has whole grain products in it. Also take into account the milk. Milk has plenty of carbohydrates and sugar.

I use a cereal that has strictly whole grains and I use just enough milk to soak the cereal with nothing left over.

i eat special k everyday...ive been diabetic for 14 years. i dont eat sugar in mine though. it doesnt affect my blood sugar anymore than any other cereals....cereals are all going to have carbs. special k is good for you because of all of the nutrients and vitamins.....but everyone is different.. it doesnt act any different with mine than if i ate another type of cereal. good luck!

No but the milk has a hole lot of carbs and starch and will raise the sugar level that way.

Everything in moderation is ok. 2 cups however is too many carbs at one time though.

Next time, try & cut your portion down to one or 1 1/2 cups- see what happens. On the nutrition label, figure out how many total carbs are in your serving. It would be ideal to have it under 25-30 (You took 2 cups, so it came out to 44 grams, plus the splenda).

Splenda is still sugar (made from sugarcane actually)- Just has zero calories (but that doesn't effect blood sugar levels). One sweetener I use is Stevia, which actually helps balance blood sugar (however, it does leave a weird aftertaste). Another sweetener I use is fructose. Many argue though that it can raise your blood sugar higher, but in many people, it helps balance blood sugar levels (It helps me balance my blood sugar & I know in Finland, they actually advertise it as doing so as well). Fructose is naturally sweeter the sugar, so you use half the amount you would sugar (so if you usually add 1 tsp in your tea, use only 1/2 tsp)

well usually their is a ratio given by your doctor like i do my ratio is 1 unit of insulin per 6 carbs so 22 for the special k plus carbs for the milk witch idk going off the top of the head is like 15? so i would take 6 units and never give up food i eat the same things regular people do well except for a lot of doughnuts and cake ahaha but you know what i mean

Special K generally 3/4 cup equals 25 carbohydrate and the 1 cup of milk has 12 carbs, so yes you had way too many carbs and this is probably what caused your sugar to spike way way up.
You must look at the words on the food label that state
TOTAL CARBOHYDRATE for the serving size indicated.
You indicated that you ate 2 cups which would have equaled
44gms of carbs and then the milk would have been 12 for 1 cup, and the Splenda can raise sugar too.
I eat Special K, I eat 3/4 c with 1c. milk and within 3 hours my sugar was 123mg/dl.
You need to read the food labels very carefully.
You can have cereal but watch the carb content. Buy some measuring cups and start monitoring your portions when you eat.
