They don't want my blood!?!

Question: I went to give blood and the nurse told me that as I had just started on Citalopram I should wait a few months. Why is this? I keep hearing and seeing advert about giving blood and feeling guilty!

It's not about you.

The drugs you take will be present in the blood that you donate & this can cause harm to the recepient.

Don't feel bad. It happens to a lot of other people too, not just you. You should feel good because you have the good intentions. Plus it is to avoid harm to the patient

This is a strong anti-depressant and will show up in your blood, that means the recipient will get it, now, do you understand ?

Some medications can be toxic to the blood recipient, so you'll have to wait for a while and donate later. No big deal, really, they are just trying to protect the sick people who would potentially get your blood.

I cannot give blood either as I have a liver difunction. At least in a few months you will be ok where as I am stuck for life feeling guilty.

thats not nice isit
aw thats a really big thing to give blood well done

Credit for going out of your way to give blood, its a shame we have not more people like you and myself.
Wait a while untill you feel that you do not need to take Citalopram any more and all traces of it have left your blood system, providing nothing else appears on the screening, I'm sure that you'll be accepted with open arms.
