you tan because UV light stimulates the pigment cells in your skin to make more pigment or melanin...even dark skinned people will darken in sunlight
If you are asking why you *continue* to tan when you are already tan, the answer is because tanning may be "addictive". Yes, read the article below from WebMD. It's not quite like a drug/narcotic/amphetamine addiction, per se. It's more like a behavioral/psychological addiction, like gambling, hypersexual behavior, some other compulsive activity.
