Jessica Jane,
The area which you describe would appear to be the sternocleidomastoid, which is a complex muscle which, when damaged in any way, may cause some neck discomfort and is often mistaken for headache. Problems are often caused from looking up too much or reading in bed with the head turned to one side from uneven lighting. This muscle pain can be aggravated by a shirt collar or necktie that is too tight. Proper pillow support is necessary.
The Levator Scapula is often noted as the "stiff neck" muscle, where it is difficult and painful to turn the head and neck. This muscle runs along the border of the scapula (shoulder blade) nearest the spine, and along the top of the scapula to the area around where the neck and shoulder appear to join. The painful effects are often caused from talking on the phone with the phone held between neck and shoulder, constant looking to one side, uneven sleeping positions, exposure of the neck to a cold draft, stress, a chair with armrests too high or walking with a cane that is too long, and many other causes.
The best way of alleviating the discomfort is by applying heat to the area and gentle massage. There are also some ointments, creams and liquids on the market that will cause local heat, ask your pharmacist for advice. If your condition does not ease within about a week, both by using these methods and changing your body postures, you would be advised to contact your doctor.

Hope this helps

have it checked out. It could be lymphatic or it could be muscle strain, I cannot legally diagnose only a dr can and he has to assess you
