Is this a normal blood sugar level for a non-diabetic?!

Question: I took my blood sugar level before I ate. I hadn't eaten for ten hours, and my blood glucose level was 71. I ate and waited two hours, and it had spiked to 133.
This is what I ate: Shrimp, peas, and corn with root beer. Before that, I had a peep and two malted milk balls. Is that what made it spike, or should I be worried about being diabetic??

71 for a fasting is good. 2 hours after drinking and eating alot of sugarand only being 133 and probably not very active is okay. I like evryone else wonder why you have the monitor does someone you know have diabetes or is this just a precaution? If so way to think ahead. I wouldn't worry since your fasting was only 71. If it goes above 120 then start to worry. Read up on diabetes on the web there is a lot of info out there.

You ate some high glycemic foods, peas, corn, peep and malted milk balls. Root beer is a high glycemic beverage. You had very little protein in the shrimp. High glycemic foods make your blood sugar rise, so yes, what you ate made it spike. Your pre-eating level of 71 is normal. Normal is 70-110 in most doctors' books. I would not worry about being a diabetic, yet. But if you keep eating like that, you may be at risk . . .

This is a normal increase after a meal, there is nothing to worry about.

You in good shape. But not eating for 10 hours and having a level of 71 is not good. My son is not a diabetic and if he gos that long he get light headed and has passed out. A sugar reading of 133 would be about right for a diabetic 2 hrs. after eating. But that would be the high for all test, no higher. Why are you testing? Look up the symptoms and see if you have any of them before you panic, maybe you just have to much time on you hands. If any of your family has Diabetes ,then yes you need to keep a eye on your blood sugar. If I ate all that sugar I would read over 320. Yes I know Peep are a killer. I Had a hard time walking past then in the store. Also any chocolate cover marshmallows get me, it like they are calling my name even from out side the store. Hell even typing this I can hear the darn peep, chirping.

What you ate could easily have caused the increase. You should be worried if it is normally that high 2 hours after a meal. I believe usually it should be under 120, 2 hours after a meal.

Most people don't just have a glucose monitor hanging around. Do you have a reason to worry?

Your body digests fats at a slower rate then carbs, protein and alcohol. The best thing to do is retest before eating, at bedtime and fasting in the morning. Keep a diary of foods eaten and at what times. Chances are you are just fine. 133 isn't abnormal after a heavy meal. But testing for a week or so will give you a base line to tell a doctor if you see spikes in these readings. Also record your activity levels. If you sat and conversed after that dinner, your blood sugar will be higher, if you played football, went jogging or do-ce-doed it may not be that good.

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

you may have typ 2 diabetes

Not too bad but lose the soda, drink diet soda.
