Question: I sometimes get cold sores on my lips it doesn't happen all that often I was just wondering if this meant I have herpes. And if I get a cold sore and I give my fiance oral will it spread down there? Please no rude comments. Thanks for all of your answers.

hahaha no.
you have herpes simplex virus 1 (aka a cold sore)
that has NOTHING to do with the std herpes.
it can spread to other mucus membranes, but don't worry about oral sex.

in a way it is herpes... but it is called herpes simplex amild form ,,, it can spread when body resistance is low...take Vit C regularly... it can spread to others by oral contact...avoid oral contact when u have sore......

cold sores are caused by herpes simplex 1 (hsv1), genital herpes are usually hsv2. BUT hsv1 can be transferred to the genital area so yes, be careful if you have an outbreak.

The type of cold sores on your lips are a diffrent type of herpes symplex if you have oral sex with your boyfriend with active lesion on your mouth yes you will pass them to your boyfriend and that would be very painful for him so wait till you clear up Im sure he would understand.

Yes, it does mean you have herpes - but it is on your mouth not your genitals. That said, it is no different to having genital herpes other than the location, and therefore it is your mouth that is infectious rather than your genitals.

Yes, if you give your partner oral sex you can give her genital herpes - even when you DO NOT have a cold sore.

There is an 8 in 10 chance that she also has oral herpes - usually hsv-1 - just like you, since 8 out of 10 people have it. If she does, if she also gets cold sores, she is highly unlikely to catch it off you this way.

If she doesn't have oral herpes/get cold sores, I'd exercise extreme caution. Though you are most infectious when you HAVE a cold sore, and from the very first tingle on your lip to 5 days after complete healing has taken place, there are also times when you will become infectious and have absolutely NO symptoms. It is known as 'asymptomatic shedding' of the virus, and happens 5-10% of the time when you are symptom-free.

I caught genital herpes from my long term partner, who gets occasional cold sores like you. We thought it was safe when he didn't have one - but I learnt the hard way we were wrong. I caught genital herpes from him giving me oral sex when he DIDN'T have a cold sore, and hadn't had one for months.

Although it isn't bad physically - it is only a cold sore down below after all - the stigma is hard to cope with and it is still just about the worst thing that ever happened to me. If I had known it could happen so easily I don't think I would ever have let him give me oral sex!

My sister also has genital herpes caught through oral sex that way. Shows how common it is. Mouth to genital transmission accounts for about half of new genital herpes infections now.

And that med student that answered before me needs to do a bit of research. Yes, cold sores are usually (95%) caused by type 1 herpes- hsv-1. But far from being 'nothing to do with the std herpes', type 1/hsv-1 actually causes 70% of genital herpes infections among young women!

And to the 'doc' who answered -BOTH of the herpes viruses are called herpes simplex - hence herpes simplex virus 1 and herpes simplex virus 2. NEITHER is milder than the other. Type 1 on the mouth is actually the most infectious (18% of the time) way to have herpes and also causes more outbreaks or 'cold sores'. It causes 'on average' less outbreaks when it infects the genitals - about 1 every 2 years - but that is an average. I had 8 outbreaks last year so it isn't to be treated lightly. And yes, hsv-2 causes a more frequently recurring infection on the genitals, but if it infects the mouth it is incredibly mild, much more so than type 1 on the genitals. All told, hsv-1 is a more severe infection.

cold sores really are oral herpes, there is no difference between the two. if u gave your fiance oral then it would spread to his genitals. thats how i got them but from my bf who gave me oral sex with cold sores. i also ended up with oral herpes. they are less contagious when there is no outbreak but they can be passed on even when there isn't an outbreak. wait until the cold sore heals up before u have oral sex.
