Step father had cancer.....?!

Question: After my stepfather had finished his cancer treatment; he had a follow up appointment with the doctor, who said they wouldn't do a follow up scan to see if the cancer was still there, in case they found something !!!
Does that mean they think the cancer may have spread, but because he's in his 70's & was really ill with the treatment that they won't do any more treatment even if it is still there ???

Hmm, it kinda sounds like they think that he won't live long enough to benefit from the treatment, which causes him a lot of pain and illness.

So instead of doing a scan, they are going to presume nothing is there so that he can live out the rest of his days in ignorant bliss.

If there was something there, they clearly must think it would be untreatable.

I suppose you could insist on them scanning him again, but i don't see why you would... there are worse things than dying, like living in pain and sickness and with a worry of impending doom.

Yes I think that's what they meant. Your stepfather is quit old now and maybe they think he wouldn't be able to take anymore treatment. Cancer treatment is really horrible so maybe the doctors think that quality of life is more important now than quantity.

It is a medical check-up...what difference does it make.....an unknowing cancer patient having just discovered his tumor or a repeat visit of a man who has been made known of the odds of his survival. It lies beyond anyone's control....only God knows!

I would think its because of the illness during treatment that they wouldn't give him anymore conventional. But if this were me, even in my 70's I would have the right to know if there is cancer still in my system so I could at least try alternatives. Unless of course he is satisfied with the current situation. Conventional meds didn't help me with my cancer, I am self-treating but still get regular scans and blood work to monitor my 'well being'.

My mother was on chemotheropy and radiation. and it's not 100% sure to work.. not a lot of things are 100% anymore.
But, I would definately get him to a hospital that cares for patients until they are better, or the worse of it..
And if it made him ill, I doubt they will do treatment anymore. I know I wouldn't let that happen, I wasn't going to either if it did happen. I would suggest you to talk to him and ask him to go see a doctor about surgery.. if that cannot be done, ask the doctor about what foods your step-father can eat to put the cancer in 'intermission'.
Usually it's vitamins and all the healthy stuff for you.
It really comes down to what kind of cancer he has.
Read about it on the net (they are right with cancers so far).
and put your best judgement on things..
sorry to hear about it. .
Deepest empathy for you.
