What's the trick where you use Vicks salve and hot water?!

Question: I have a chest infection and and pretty miserable right now. I read that Vicks and boiling water works well but how much Vicks do I need to use and do I put it directly in the boiling water?

I can remember my Mom always putting the entire bottle of vicks in hot water.....just so that the vapors would come from the bottle... So just a little bit of water....obviously below the rim of the vicks bottle.....and it will heat the Vicks up nicely so you can breath the vapors .....
Wow...thank you actually for reminding me of that...brings back old memories....and im sure i will try it again ....well that is next time I get a cold...
