A question about bowel color and gastrointestinal bleeding...?!

Question: when Doctor's say that if you have gastro-intestinal bleeding or ulcer in the stomach, or even stomach cancer, your bowel movement will become tarry and black. When they say black is it usually meant as literally black? Dark brownish green would be considered something else right? Mainly due to diet?

Black is black and tarry is just that--tarry black. When you see it it looks like a freshly paved blacktop. Brown and green don't cut it. It is the end result of the effects of gastric HCL acid on fresh blood that may occur in the stomach or duodenum.

The "blackness" or tarry color is caused by blood in your digestive tract. Any other color would be your diet.

it will definitely be the color of tar.
