I'm scared I might have diabetes?!

Question: Recently I've been feeling kind of sick in a way I'm not sure how to explain, so I tried googling to see if something was wrong with me.
I came across diabetes symptoms and soon I began to freak out as I had more than 2 of the symptoms.
For some reason I've been feeling fatigue lately,
I've been feeling hungry a lot of times and thirsty
And I've been urinating a lot too...
I'm 14 years old, 120lb. I'm scared, could I possibly have diabetes? should I go for a check up? )=
I've also recently been through trauma because I was mugged on Friday, so could this just be because I'm a bit traumatized still?

Okay, start by not freaking out. Understandably, you are upset, but worrying yourself endlessly will only make matter worse. If your symptoms came on suddenly, and after your mugging, its quite likely that your body is just fighting off the extra adrenaline that is produced during times of high stress-frequent urination is one way the body eliminates these chemicals. Yes, you should go for a check up, just to be on the safe side. In the meantime, do some deep breathing excercises, and just try to calm yourself. Quench your thirst with plenty of quality water. Juice, soft drinks, and sports drinks will only make matter worse in any case. Don't think that you will reduce the frequent urination by NOT drinking water-you need to flush our your body, and the water will help regulate the hormones and chemicals that your body releases during times of stress. Just chill, and don't work yourself into a frenzy with worrying. The symptoms you have can be many things, most likely just normal growing pains or stress. Feel free to email me if you need more help. Calm down, and rest!

Also, don't pay too much attention to some of the answers you got. First, many of the answers come from people your own age, who are not familiar with this type of thing. Yes, you should be checked, but jumping to conclusions will get you no where. Take a calm, rational approach, and support your body as much as you can nutritionally until you can see the doctor. Having a panic attack based on incorrect and misinformed answers won't help matters.

Maybe, but I would get checked.

It is one of the easiest things in the world to get checked for, and if you catch it early, it will do way less damage to your body.

You are not the body type and age to have this. Because you are so young, I would give it a few weeks, and ask a family doc (if you have access to one easily) to give you an epi pen, just in case.

Really, you are probably still freaked out. I would be very surprised if a thin 14 r old girl developed diabetes (unless you have an autoimmune disease or recent severe illness you are not mentioning)

None the less, I would get it checked out if nothing more than for peace of mind. You have lots to be upset about already. Don't let something like this be added to the list when it is so easy to diagnose.

I wish you the best of luck.

I am truly sorry to hear that you were mugged. The trauma certainly could cause you to have very dry mouth and feel thirsty a lot. The fatigue could be situational depression due to the trauma. If you're drinking a lot, it stands to reason you are going to have to urinate frequently. I would sure try to talk to someone. Hopefully you're able to share your concerns with your parents. It certainly would not hurt to go to a doctor and have your blood sugar checked. It takes a second and it doesn't hurt. Trauma and illnesses can cause our blood sugars to go up even if our pancreas is working fine. Be sure, if you do go to the doctor you tell him/her about the trauma. Take care! Be safe! And don't just ignore your symptoms.

well the 2 most common symptoms are frequent urination and extreme thirst and numbing of extremities is also another factor, but at your age it would be really surprised that it would be diabetes, but if you are really concerned go see your doc. It doesn't hurt to have a glucose test to find out for sure!

I guess it could be a few things. If anything is making you very thirsty and drink a lot is automatically going to increase urination. But if you want to check about diabetes you can initially have a urine test which checks for sugar in your urine and only takes a few minutes.

Go right away! My husband has type 2 diabetes and it can cause serious complications if not treated . Tell your guardian to make an appointment ASAP to get tested. Print out the symptoms and check off how many you have, take the sheet to the Dr.
Don't let anyone talk you out off getting tested, only you know how you really feel!
Let me know the results!
ps. Sorry about the mugging, I pray you'll overcome the trauma and feel better.

cHRISTY, BEING A DIEBETIC MYSELF, I URGE YOU TO GET A CHECK-UP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. DON'T EVER THINK YOU ARE TOO YOUNG FOR DIABETES. THERE IS SUCH A THING AS TYPE ONE DIEBETES WHICH IS VERY COMMON IN YOUNG PEOPLE. YOU COULD ALSO BE SUFFERING FROM DEHYDRATION CAUSED FROM YOUT TRAMATIC EVENT, WHICH COULD CAUSE YOUR SYSTEM TO EXPELL LIQUID FASTER THAN YOU TAKE IT IN. NEVER THE LESS GET YOURSELF TO A DOCTOR RIGHT AWAY. GOOD LUCK

i would go to the doctor and get checked diabetes is nothing to mess around with causes heart problems feet problems and attacks your eyes but if caught in time nothing to wory about you just gotta watch what you eat and watch intake of pasta and sugar. go see your doctor and dont worry until tou have to it will be ok in the end good luck

FIRST OF ALL , ALL THESE ANSWERS SAYING THAT YOUR ARE TOO YOUNG TO HAVE DIABETES IS NOT CORRECT. TYPE ONE DIABETES (ALSO KNOWN AS JUVENILE DIABETES) HAPPENS IN KIDS AND TEENS). HOWEVER i HAVE 4 DIABETIC BROTHERS TYPE 1 AND TYPE 2. ALTHOUGH IT DOES SEEM THAT YOU HAVE A FEW OF THE SYMPTOMS THERE ARE ALSO OTHERS. SUDDEN WEIGHT LOSS, MOOD SWINGS, TINGLING OF THE HANDS AND FEET. I DO THINK THAT YOU SHOULD GET TESTED JUST TO RULE IT OUT. BUT IT SOUNDS MORE LIKE POST TRAUMATIC STRESS. DON'T FREAK OUT JUST MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOUR DOCTOR AND LET THEM KNOW HOW YOU ARE FEELING. NO MATTER WHAT THE DIAGNOSIS I'M SURE THEY WILL BE ABLE TO HELP AND GET YOU TO FEELING BETTER. I'M SO SORRY FOR WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU. HANG IN THERE.

Don't fear what you don't know. Go see your doctor and have some fasting tests done and he can let you know if you have diabetes or could be prediabetic. It is a simple test to find out. Whenever you think you have anything wrong with you, go find out and go quick so that you can get it under control asap. Getting mugged is certainly a trauma to you mentally and physically too. But you sound as tho' you have been tired for some time and that isn't right for a 14 year old. You should be full of energy. Go for the check up. I've had diabetes for some time and it isn't all that bad, you just have to be careful when and what and how much you eat. Usually you are very thin-Type I or heavy Type II but you sound just right. It could be you just need a better diet. . .So go find out and good luck. . .

it could be because you were mugged but i don't know how hard your were hit or what, but if you can go to the doctor and get checked out that would be a great help to you, the most common part of getting diabeties is stress and it can cause you to increase the chance or getting it, you need to get a glucose test done and find out if they can catch it before it becomes in a more threat

How long have you been having these symptoms?

Anyway: there are two types of diabetes: type 2 is the one that is due to obesity and stuff
Type 1 is also callled juvanile diabetes, and it's due to... nothing, actually. Nobody knows what causes it... it's just that for some unknown reason antibodies attack pancreas, so you no longer have insuline in your body and there's no way for carbs to be absorbed by cell (that's why one feels sick and hungry). Carbs accumulate in the blood, and the body tries to get rid of it urinating, so you lose liquids and always feel thirsty.
In fact the very main symptom for diabetes is being crazily thirsty.. I remember when I was diagnosed I'd been unbelievably thirsty for weeks, I was almost going crazy about it!
When the doctors told me I "only" had diabetes, and insuline injections would solve anything... I felt so relieved... :) Sounds strange but it's true.
Now I have a normal life... except insuline injections, but it's something I immediately got used too

Well... you might not have diabetes: the symptoms you have might be due to... nothing important. Could be temporary, could be just due to the recent trauma you had... anyway tell a doctor and get a check.
