feels good to scratch... reliefs an itch

because we itch

because with itch

When your body feels some type of irritant on the skin, whether a microscopic hair, or maybe a thread or something left over from your clothing, your nerves send an impulsory signal to your brain to tend to it, kinda, I guess.

I read something to that effect in a bathroom reader. Don't remember the full answer or technical reasons though :/

You have histamine receptors in your skin. When your skin is inflamed or irritated(sun burn, dry skin, bug bite), histamine will come to the surface of skin, causes itching. This is why we will sometimes use medications with (antihistamines).

Why do we scratch?

A simple answer would be because we itch, but how does scratching make itching (or pruritis in doctor lingo) better. But the real answer is

the most characteristic response to itching is the scratch reflex: a more or less voluntary, often subconscious motoric activity to counteract the itch by slightly painful stimuli. This itch reduction is based on a spinal antagonism between pain- and itch-processing neurons
In other words scratching causes a mild, painful sensation that inhibits transmission of the "itch" signal:

I never knew that!

Evolutionarily this makes sense: noxious (e.g. painful stimuli) cause withdrawl, but itching usually signifies something on or under the skin. The pain from scratching prompts closer inspection.
SCRATCHING an itch, sneezing, crying and blushing ...they are just some of the simple little things we all do without even thinking about it.

But now the true reasons behind these common habits have been revealed by scientists.

According to new research, scratching has nothing to do with itches or irritation.

It's actually about psychology and dealing with unpleasant memories that are coming to the surface.

Thenew report in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that when we scratch, we are stimulating the parts of the brain which are associated with unhappy thoughts, and the act of scratching helps to dispel those thoughts.

Now you know why you really scratch, here's the reasons behind your other habits.

mosquito bites!
